Hi, SSL can be used to secure the communication between the client and the server through the use of certificates. There could be two scenarios where you might want to configure SSL: 1. Inbound calls to Denodo: This is when a client connects to Denodo Virtual DataPort Server. The client can be internal (for example Denodo Virtual DataPort Admin Tool) or external (for example some third party JDBC/ODBC client). You can find more information [here](https://community.denodo.com/docs/html/browse/7.0/platform/installation/postinstallation_tasks/enable_ssl_connections_in_the_denodo_platform_servers/enable_ssl_connections_in_the_denodo_platform_servers). 2. Outbound calls from Denodo: This scenario would have Denodo connecting to external data sources. You could read more about the steps required for this configuration [here](https://community.denodo.com/kb/view/document/SSL%20connection%20from%20VDP%20to%20data%20sources?category=Security). Hope this helps!

Hi, SSL is not really needed to connect to on-premise/cloud environments, but the SSL adds an additional layer of security which would be determined based on whether the owner of the server wants this kind of security applied to the services that are being exposed. For inbound communication, SSL will come into picture only if you choose to secure the Denodo Virtual DataPort server with a certificate, due to which any client connecting to Denodo would need to have valid SSL enabling to connect to the server. For outbound communication, if the data source Denodo connects to has secured its communication through a certificate, Denodo will need to have the necessary configurations in place to connect successfully. Hope this helps!
