How to import column descriptions from MS SQL Server data sources?

Similar to the following article about Oracle: https://community.denodo.com/kb/view/document/How%20to%20import%20column%20descriptions%20from%20Oracle%20data%20sources?category=Data+Sources How does it work for MS SQL server to get the descriptions/comments for SQL Server data, so they will be imported automatically in Denodo base views (after a source refresh or creating a new base view)?

Hi, It is possible to use the ALTER TABLE command as seen below to add a description for columns of a base view created from a Microsoft SQL Server Data Source: ALTER TABLE <baseview_name> ( ALTER COLUMN <column_name> ADD ( DESCRIPTION = <‘The new description’> )) Microsoft SQL Server does not provide a similar property to TABLE_REMARKS driver property of oracle to allow column descriptions to be imported into Denodo Virtual DataPort. You can refer to the section [Modifying a base view](https://community.denodo.com/docs/html/browse/7.0/vdp/vql/creating_a_base_view/modifying_a_base_view/modifying_a_base_view) of Virtual DataPort VQL Guide for more information about the alter statement and the community question [Update large number of Base Views Column Descriptions from another base view](https://community.denodo.com/answers/question/details?questionId=9060g000000g01mAAA&title=Update+large+number+of+Base+Views+Column+Descriptions+from+another+base+view) for more details. Hope this helps!

What about the Extended Properties in SQL Server, can they be accessed somehow?

Hi, You could import the column description of the tables which are added using the standard **MS_Description** option of the Microsoft SQL Server in the Denodo Platform. However, there is an enhancement request to import the column description added using the **Extended Properties** option of the Microsoft SQL Server. Therefore, you could expect this feature in the future updates of Denodo Platform. Hope this helps!

Dear Denodo team! Could you please clarify if the above decribed feature ("enhancement request to import the column description added using the Extended Properties..."). Has been implemented in the latest releases/ updates? I currently have the same issue with MS SQL server, where I have a human readable description for tables and columns is defined as extended property but is not imported by Denodo when creating the base views. Best, Georg

Hi, The enhancement to import the column description added using the Extended Properties of the Microsoft SQL Server is registered and it would be included in the future releases of Denodo Platform. Also, in case I want to obtain the description from Microsoft SQL Server, I would write a script or program which **connects** to Denodo using JDBC, **reads** the descriptions from the base view and then **updates** the columns of the other base views with these descriptions by using the ALTER TABLE command like below: > ALTER TABLE your_baseview ( > ALTER COLUMN column_to_update ADD ( DESCRIPTION = ‘The new description’ ) > ); Additionally, if you are a valid Support user, you may open a [Support Case](https://support.denodo.com/) at the Denodo Support Site and the Support Team will help you. Hope this helps!
