Introduction to Upgrading the Denodo Platform

The process of upgrading to a new major version of the Denodo Platform involves installing the new version in a separate computer - or in a different directory of the same computer - and transferring the metadata and settings from the version 7.0 to the new installation. The same applies to the Solution Manager.

To upgrade from Denodo Platform 6.0 or earlier, you have to transfer the metadata and settings to the version 7.0 and from 7.0 to 8.0. The section Upgrading from Denodo Platform 6.0 or Earlier below provides more details about this process.

Major Steps in the Upgrade Process

The process of upgrading to the Denodo Platform 8.0 consists of six major steps:

Important

Do not start the upgrade if you cannot install the latest update 7.0. This update adds a feature to make compatible the metadata of version 7.0 with 8.0.

  • Step 1. Install the latest update of the Denodo Platform 7.0 and the latest update of the Solution Manager 7.0.

  • Step 2. Install the Denodo Platform 8.0 and the Solution Manager 8.0.

  • Step 3. Change some settings in the new installation (e.g. enable the cache).

  • Step 4. Export the settings and metadata of all the components of the Denodo Platform, including the Solution Manager.

  • Step 5. Import the settings and metadata into the new version.

  • Step 6. Test the upgraded version.

Running Both Versions in the Same Computer

You can install the Denodo Platform 8.0 in the same computer as the current Denodo installation but they have to be installed on a different directory. For example, you can have /opt/denodo/denodo-platform-7.0 and /opt/denodo/denodo-platform-8.0. In this scenario, choose one of these options:

  1. Configure the new installation or the old one to use different ports to listen to connections. If they use different ports, they can run simultaneously on the same host.

If both versions run simultaneously, you need to be mindful of the requirements of CPU, memory and disk of both versions.

  2. Or only run one version of the Denodo Platform at the same time. E.g., you can start either Virtual DataPort version 8.0 or a previous version, but not both at the same time because, with the default configuration, both versions listen to connections on the same ports.

Option b) make migrations easier because other applications will not have to update the port they connect to.
