Domains and Categories

Your company’s data infrastructure can handle a large number of views, web services and external elements. To make it easy to find the right element for your data need, the Data Catalog allows you to organize all your elements using domains and categories. A domain represents a main area of your organization that is useful for classifying your data assets. Views, web services and external elements that are related to each other according to that classification will belong to the same domain. You can define categories inside a domain, and make this classification more specific.

To start browsing your views, web services or external elements by domains and categories, go to Browse > Domains / Categories. The sidebar shows the hierarchical structure of domains and categories. Expand a domain to explore its categories. Click a domain or category and access its details.

In the details page you will find the domain or category name, its place in the hierarchy and a description. In the Views, Web Services and External Elements pills you can explore all the elements that belong to the selected domain or category. Click on any item to navigate to its details page.

Note

If the option “Show the elements belonging to the selected category or any of its subcategories” is enabled in Administration > Personalization, the elements belonging to any of the subcategories of the domain or category selected will also be shown.

If you have the proper permissions, you will be able to edit this information. Use the edit icon next to each field to update its value. In the upper right corner click the Parent category button to change the parent category of the current one. On the other hand click the Add elements button and access to a new page where you can change the set of views and web services that are members of the domain or category. For external elements this functionality can be performed from the details page of an external element.

Notice that you can filter the domains and categories shown in the sidebar. Under the pills menu at the top of the sidebar you have a search bar. Type some query terms on it and press ENTER (or click the search icon).

Note

When you are browsing by domains and categories, the Data Catalog shows you the elements stored in its metadata. If there were changes in Virtual DataPort since the last time the Data Catalog was synchronized, these changes will not be reflected.
