Reference Lineage of External Element¶

The Reference Lineage pill contains a diagram that shows the Dataset Entities that use this Report and how data flow from the Report to the different Dataset entities or Denodo’s View. If a Report uses a Denodo view, the node of this view links with its Data Lineage diagram, which shows how this View is built based on other views and how data flows from the data sources into the view in each query.

The Reference Lineage diagram is a tree that has the current Report at the top, as the root node, and the Dataset entities at the bottom, these nodes could be leaf nodes or could be linked with the View node if the Dataset entity use a View to be built. Starting from the Report it shows three or four levels: the Report, the Datasets, the Dataset entities and the Denodo view if it is used.

There are two types of nodes: one line nodes or two line nodes. Both show the left-icon, the type and the or icon, except for the leaf nodes. The two-line nodes also show a left-icon, the name, and a icon, when the element has a details page. The nodes are classified in three different groups which are identified by a color code in the top-left icon. This classification uses red for Denodo Elements, grey for Data Sources, and blue for External Elements. The group of external elements can also be identified by the icon representing its server type, such as Tableau or Power BI.

To obtain more information about some element click the node and a tooltip will appear with information about the element: Connection Type, Extracts, Dataset Type, Server Type, etc. You can click the icon in the tooltip to get a popup with further information. The view nodes have an expand button which show the Data Lineage tree of this view. When this tree is loaded, the view node is updated with the Denodo’s information, showing more details of this element.

This diagram supports basic operations like zoom in, zoom out, moving the diagram by drag and drop, collapsing nodes in the tree, exporting it as an image, etc.
