Denodo updates are cumulative. Each update file contains all the changes from all previous updates in addition to new changes. So, on a new installation, it is only needed to install the latest update in order to add all the fixes and new features included in older updates.

Best Practices to follow when installing the update

  1. Stop all Denodo servers and tools, as well as any instances of Microsoft Internet Explorer on the host where you plan to install the update or hotfix.
  2. Create a copy of the entire Denodo Platform folder. Since it is not possible to rollback a Denodo update, this copy will allow you to quickly restore the Platform to its previous state if needed.
  3. If any components are configured to store metadata and settings on an external database, it is advisable to make a backup of the catalog of the database where the metadata is stored.

Identifying and resolving installation errors during updates

In Denodo 9 and updates from Denodo 8.0u20230914 onwards, the update installer will check for errors during the installation of the main update or the previous hotfix. If it finds any, it will not let you install the new update until you have fixed those errors by reinstalling the previous one correctly.

For updates predating Denodo 8.0u20230914 and on earlier versions of the Denodo Platform, troubleshooting installation issues involves installing the update or hotfix via the command line and appending the parameter --log-level=DEBUG. For instance:

cd <DENODO_HOME>

./jre/bin/java -jar denodo-v80-update-202102092200.jar <DENODO_HOME> -c --log-level=DEBUG

After completing the installation process, open the latest file in the folder <DENODO_HOME>/logs/update. This file holds logging details regarding the installation process, which can aid in pinpointing the issue. The parameter --log-level accepts values ranging from most to least informational: TRACE, DEBUG, INFO, WARN, and ERROR.
