This connection guide provides basic information about setting up connections to HP Vertica from the Denodo Platform. In this document we will show you how to create data sources that connect to HP Vertica, create base views on HP Vertica tables, and query these tables from the Virtual DataPort Administration Tool.

Denodo and HP Vertica Product Versions

In this document, to test the connectivity from the Denodo Platform to HP Vertica the following software versions have been used:

Denodo Platform

Denodo 5.5

Client Platform

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

HP Vertica Client

HP Vertica JDBC 7.1

HP Vertica Server

HP Vertica Analytic Database v7.1

Install the HP Vertica Client Drivers

Before you can install the HP Vertica client drivers, your client systems must meet the following requirements:

Operating system

For the list of supported platforms, see HP Vertica Client Drivers.

UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32 support

Configure the driver to use the required encoding method. This encoding allows strings to be passed between the driver and the application without intermediate conversion.

Installing the JDBC Client Driver on Windows

The Windows client drivers (ODBC, JDBC, etc.) are all installed using a single installer. There are 32-bit and 64-bit installers available. The 32-bit installer provides a 32-bit driver. The 64-bit installer provides both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers.

Follow the instructions at Installing ODBC/JDBC Client Drivers and vsql Client on Windows in the HP Vertica documentation.

Connect to HP Vertica

To connect to HP Vertica, you need to create a JDBC data source. Then you can create the base views that will represent the HP Vertica tables.

Create a JDBC Data Source

  1. Open the Virtual DataPort Administration Tool, log in and go to File > New > Data source > JDBC. The Create New JDBC Data Source dialog box opens.
  2. Enter the connection details for your HP Vertica database and click OK:
  1. Select Vertica 7 as Database adapter
  2. For the Driver class path (optional) property browse to the location where the Vertica drivers are installed.
  3. Enter the URI for the Vertica server following the predefined format and enter the login details.

If everything is correct, you see a list of schemas in your HP Vertica database.

Create a Base View

To create a base view of the tables you want to query, follow these steps:

  • Click + to expand the schema name you are interested in.
  • Select the tables you want to import.
  • At the bottom of the window, select Create selected base views.
  • A list of views will appear on the Elements Treel of the VDP administration tool.

Query a Base View

To query one of the base views you just created, follow these steps:

  1. On the Elements Tree on the left-hand side of the screen, right-click the base view name and click Execute. The Execute view window appears.

  1. If you do not want to add any conditions to this query sentence, click Execute. If you do want to add conditions to the query, click the icon next to Conditions and click Execute when you return to this window.
